Japan - As Nintendo’s two-year anniversary of the Wii launch approaches, lifetime sales for the system are nearing a PS2-like 7 million units early in its life cycle. Weekly market share gains strength (51%) and lifetime market share continues to hover around the 70% mark that it has been flirting with since April of 2007.

In stark contrast, the PS3 has only just crossed the 2.4 million mark in two years. If the trend continues, the PS3 may barely pass 5 million lifetime in the traditional console life cycle of 5 years. Total lifetime market share has held steady between 22% and 27% since January of 2007.

Notably, Microsoft’s 360 has clearly taken a major bite out of Sony’s Japanese strategy, taking more than 7% market share that would presumably go to the PS3.

Europe PS3 sales ‘overtake Xbox 360′

Sales of the PS3 in Europe have overtaken sales of the Xbox 360 according to figures released by Sony.
David Reeves from Sony said “More than 5 million PS3s have been sold on the continent.”

Reeves said “the numbers are a testament to to the strength of the Playstation brand.” He also confirmed that 12 million PSPs and 48 million PS2s had been sold in Europe.

Although the Xbox 360 sells more in the UK, it does not do very well elsewhere in Europe.

Despite all these sales both the PS3 and Xbox 360 are still behind the Nintendo Wii in sales and have a lot of catching up to do.
Microsoft released a 60GB Xbox 360 a few weeks ago and with the new release of the 80GB PS3 and the upcoming release of the 160GB PS3, there will be fierce competition in the Games Console market.
