Sony Didn’t Intend PS3 To Succeed As A Console
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
Everyone was probably glad to know that the PS3 managed to sell more than a 150k during November. And while many Sony fans would see the glass half full, analysts and skeptics would see the glass half-empty, considering that the PS3 and PS2 combined didn’t come close to the Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii’s numbers. However, selling a console during this generation wasn’t Sony’s priority for the PS3 to begin with. Good numbers or not, Sony already accomplished what they wanted from their third-generation console.
It all started back in E3 2005 with an article on IGN comparing Sony’s and Microsoft’s console specs. A lot of people are going to say “But the specs have changed since then.” However, it’s not the specs that gave away the PS3’s general purpose, it was the intention of the specs. The one comment that stands out above them all in the article is the one that pinpoints what the PS3 has displayed in realtime gameplay (at present) and for what Sony was really using the PS3 for, as the comments states: “Sony’s CPU is ideal for an environment where 12.5% of the work is general-purpose computing and 87.5% of the work is DSP calculations. That sort of mix makes sense for video playback or networked waveform analysis, but not for games.”
That comment has stuck with me for the past three years, and with good reason. Now I’m sure techies will break down the PS3 specs to justify it as a more suitable gaming platform than the Xbox 360, but the fact of the matter remains: Developers needed multithreaded middleware just to keep the framerate stable when developing high-end games on the PS3. However, there was nothing needed for optimized video playback for high-definition optical media, specifically, Blu-ray media.
It all comes full-circle, and the facts are these: Even if the PS3 is Sony’s last console Sony still wins. Whether the PS3 turns a profit or tanks, Sony still wins. For those of who you don’t know what I’m talking about, simply understand that Sony, as an electronic giant, simply needs to survive the economic ebb to reap the benefits of what the PlayStation 3 established for the company. That establishment happens to be the Blu-ray format. The company didn’t intend for the PS3 to succeed as the next big console, so much as they intended it to push their new format through the door, successfully. And it did.
Unless another form of high-def optical media emerges within the next two years, Sony will control the high-definition era of optical media for visual entertainment. Anyone who wants to see high-def movies, guess what format you’re going to have to go with? Anyone who wants to burn high-def media, guess what format has to be used? If Microsoft wants the Xbox 360 to play anything other than DVD9 material, guess what format they’re going to have to use? Sony didn’t need the PS3 to just win over gamers, they just needed a vessel to carry over a new format that they would own. Something that Sony’s BetaMax and their UMD failed to do in the past.
While Nintendo may control the console gaming market, and Microsoft has a stranglehold on the hardcore gaming arena, Sony will own all with Blu-ray. Even Microsoft and Nintendo will have to bow to Sony if they plan to use the formats for their current or future consoles. The only thing gamers can hope for is that Sony doesn’t abandon the PS3 too soon (since they have no need for it anymore), or otherwise the entire gaming community will be stuck with Wii shovelware and Halo spin-offs for the rest of this gaming generation.
LittleBigPlanet sells more than 1 million

It took a geduurt, but eventually reached the LittleBigPlanet.More than one million, the game sold, and that is for a new project is fairly good. However, the expectations were higher, but not bad, the game sold. Partly thanks to the long life of LittleBigPlanet (by the user created content), and the multiplayer feature that allows you to 4 man can make a level off and ensure that this game is very attractive for PlayStation 3 users.
It is also clear that all those ads for the game LittleBigPlanet sales certainly help. Usually it is true that fewer and fewer games to sell, but in the last week in Europe to see an upward trend. Hopefully they keep rising even as volume, and the game more than 2 million are sale!

LittleBigPlanet Was A LittleBig-Flop Because Of Beta
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
LittleBigPlanet would probably be considered the biggest, most anticipated game of the year for the PS3. Fans were estatic about the game; gaming blogs and publications were already hailing Sackboy and Sackgirl as the next Mario and Luigi; and Sony seemed to put enough interest into the game to promote it as the next mascot-based title for the PlayStation brand. However, things didn’t seem to look quite as grand when the NPD results were released, and LittleBigPlanet looked more like a single-A title rather than a triple-A system seller.
While Sony managed to move more than 200,000 units of the game for the PS3 — which is impressive if it were a game made by a no-name developer and published by an even lesser known publisher — it looks a little bleak when compared to the million-units-sold mark that Gears of War 2, Far Cry 2, GTA IV and other titles managed to achieve within a few weeks. As a triple-A title, LittleBigPlanet would easily be considered a LittleBig-Flop. Nevertheless, sites like Electronista believes that there may be a discrepancy in the numbers due to the amount of LBP units that may have been sold alongside PS3 consoles that may not have been counted in the final statistics. Regardless of excuses, that doesn’t justify why it sold less than SOCOM: Confrontation, another first-party exclusive for the PS3, which was far less hyped and received very little promotional efforts from Sony.
Even though I hate to say it, I think Cliffy B. had a point in his deviation from allowing demos and betas to be released of high-profile projects. With more than 25,000 beta keys that were made available from Sony for the LittleBigPlanet beta a few months back, it’s easy to see how gamers got in a good deal of play time and then figured it wasn’t worth buying the full version, especially if they invited friends over to play, who didn’t even need the beta. Based on the sales it looks as if a lot of gamers got in their game time and figured it wasn’t urgent to purchase the game once it was released. This became further evident when Kotaku reported on people buying LittleBigPlanet beta keys from ebay. And given the extensive amount of playability (and creativity) offered within the beta of LBP, I’m sure a lot of gamers forfeited the added expense of buying the game when it did become available.
I wonder if Sony is secretly resenting the “stress test” for which the beta was intended? What’s funny, though, is that despite the moderate sales of LBP, Sony was apparently pleased with the results, according to VideoGamer.com. Maybe someone should tell the execs at SCE that software sales usually decline on a title as time goes on, they don’t increase. Then again, they seem to be aiming the PS3 to exit the world backwards, because these are the same folks who are not planning on cutting the PS3’s price during the holidays or soon after the holidays, so says PCMag.com. So I guess Sony is just running their entertainment division butt-backwards from here on out, which is not too surprising given that they thought people would be thrilled to pay $700 for the PS3 back in 2006, when the economy was already showing signs of edging toward disaster.
LittleBigPlanet Not Doomed in Sales?
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
You might have been worried over the sales of the PlayStation 3 gem, LittleBigPlanet. However, ESPLA Chart Track has given LittleBigPlanet a Silver sales award for November 2008.
Lets just make this clear, the Silver award is given to titles that sell more than one-hundred-thousand units in that particular month. LittleBigPlanet launched on Novemeber 5th in the UK, so the title performed relatively well in its launch month, despite falling down the charts.
Not that many titles received the award this year, so it appears that LittleBigPlanet did get some recognition from the masses. Now, I can hear you whispering “only one-hundred-thousand”? Now listen. These are numbers for the UK, for one month, and the actual sales number will be between 100k and 200k.
After a little bit of research and some simple sums, we can estimate that if the title sold exactly one-hundred-thousand units in the UK, it would have sold over three-hundred-thousand units in all of Europe; since the UK accounts for approximately one third of the European video games market.
Add on US and Japan sales, and LittleBigPlanet isn’t too far off the 1 million mark worldwide. So although the title is dramatically sliding down the charts, the stuffed Sackboy isn’t doing as badly as we might have first thought. Especially considering that Sony has yet to implement its $1 million December advertising campaign for the game.
Other titles received the Silver award, including Fall Out 3, Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King. The Gold award (two-hundred-thousand units) went out to Fable II and Mass Effect. The Platinum award (three-hundred-thousands units) to Gears of War II and Call of Duty: World at War. Whereas, Wii Fit and Mario Kart Wii reached Diamond status by selling more than 1 million units in November.
The full list of winners can be found below. Confused or inspired by the chart? Don’t hesitate to express yourself after the article.
[UPDATE] - It has been pointed out to me that although the UK represents around a third of Europe’s video games market, it actually represents approximately 25% of the PlayStation market. That is, PlayStation games sell very strongly in Germany, France, Spain etc. This means that LittleBigPlanet should be above four-hundred-thousand units in Europe.
Analysis: PS3 vs Xbox 360, which controller is better for games?
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
he age old debate of which controller is better, the PS3 Dualshock 3 or the Xbox 360 gamepad has raged on for years. Today, I will take the time to settle all the misconceptions and break down which controller is better for what type of game. I have performed an analysis on shooters, fighters and racers using various games to perform the shake-down test.
I will first start off with the actual dimensions, and then move onto the different game genres the controllers might be better suited for.
Dimensions
Contrary to popular belief, both the PS3 dualshock 3 (DS3) and the Xbox 360 gamepad are quite similar in size. With both controllers laid out, the dimensions of the controllers are roughly 6 x 3.5 x 2 inches. There is a misconception that the Xbox 360 controller is bigger than the PS3 controller which is false. The Xbox 360 controller however does have slightly more girth around the handle area causing you to cradle the controller instead of grasping it like the DS3.
Fighters - Soul Calibur (Xbox 360 & PS3 versions)
Fighters such as Street Fighter, Tekken and Soul Calibur require the use of the d-pad to execute precise moves. However, due to the finicky nature of executing a move, exact precision is required. When observing the d-pad of both the Xbox 360 and the PS3, gamers will notice a significant difference between the two.
On the Xbox 360, the d-pad is utterly useless due to its odd design. Moves are extremely hard to execute because you literally feel like you are trying to move a single piece of plastic, versus having independent up, down, left and right angles.
This is where the PS3 dualshock controller excels. The d-pad on the DS3 is actually quite good. The angles are very easy to hit on the d-pad to execute special moves in games. Despite being on a single piece, the d-pad actually feels like the up, down, left, and right angles are on separate buttons due to its partitioned bending design. When you press down, the character will actually squat or sidestep down, instead of starting to walk forward or backwards due to inaccuracy.
Before you go off blaming Microsoft on the poor d-pad design, blame Sony and Nintendo for holding two of the best d-pad patents on the market.
Winner - PS3
Racers: Forza Motorsports 2 (Xbox 360) vs. Gran Turismo Prologue (PS3)
Racers rely on two important things, horizontal movement and acceleration and deceleration. Considering that the horizontal movements in racers are always gradual turns, twitchy analog stick reaction is not necessarily important. However, the acceleration and deceleration does play an important role in playing racers.
Most racers utilize the Xbox 360 triggers or L2 and R2 on the DS3 to accelerate and decelerate. I can see that Sony wanted to make the L2 and R2 buttons more like race car pedals, where you experience increasing pressure or resistance the more you press the L2 and R2 buttons.
The Xbox 360 triggers are a single solid spring action press, similar to that of a trigger of a gun, hence the name triggers. Once fully depressed you actually experience less resistance.
In theory, the PS3’s DS3 ‘triggers’ look good on paper, but perform poorly in practice. Due to the increasing resistance of the buttons, a gamer will start to tire from holding on the the trigger for too long. Gamers will even start to lose grip of the buttons after holding on for a long time. In contrast the Xbox 360 gamepad’s triggers, once fully depressed offer very little resistance ensuring less fatigue and longer gameplay time.
Winner - Xbox 360
Shooter - Call of Duty 4 (PS3 & Xbox 360 versions)
Analyzing controller performance for shooters is extremely difficult because a huge part of it relies on gamer preference. Traditional console gamers who have used the dualshock controller since the days of PS1 over 10 years ago, will swear that the dualshock is the best controller for shooters. However, more recent entrants to console gaming within the past few years may find the Xbox 360 gamepad better for shooters.
Since I am a hardcore PC gamer, I will analyze the controllers from that perspective. In PC gaming the mouse offers near zero ‘dead zone.’ A dead zone is the area where the mouse or analog stick sits a rest and does not register any movement. An easy way of understanding this is if there was no dead zone in a controller’s analog stick, the reticule (or aim) would constantly move around the screen.
The dead zone is an area around the center of the analog stick which allows for the aim to rest without the on screen reticule moving all over the place. After careful analysis of both controllers, the PS3 has a slightly smaller dead zone than the Xbox 360’s gamepad.
This means that the Xbox 360’s gamepad has a larger dead zone, or area where little to no movement is registered. The PS3’s DS3 has a smaller dead zone, meaning that it takes less effort to register a movement using the analog stick. The PS3’s analog stick is also noticeably loose compared to that of the Xbox 360’s analog stick, which offers a bit of resistance.
So, you may be asking - what does the size of the dead zone have to do with anything?
The simple answer is precision. With a larger dead zone it takes more effort and motion to make a movement. Coupled along with higher resistance or friction to the analog stick, it can lead to over compensation for gamers. Also sloppy aiming occurs due to greater motion required to achieve a movement.
Since the PS3’s DS3 has a smaller dead zone the analog stick is much more responsive. Also, with the analog stick being looser, it is more akin to a mouse’s movement.
However, there is a price for a smaller dead zone. Controllers can malfunction more easily because wear and tear eats away at the analog stick’s rest position. After a few years the analog stick may not sit dead center, causing the on screen reticule to move by itself. I have experienced this on several occasions with the DS2. Since the Xbox 360’s analog sticks have a larger dead zone it takes more wear and tear for this to happen.
Also, another price you pay for a smaller dead zone is it may be harder to use the PS3’s analog stick to aim for gamers who have slower reflexes. The larger dead zone can actually act as a handicap or cheat for gamers with faster reflexes on the Xbox 360.
In conclusion, if two gamers with fast reflexes, one with an Xbox 360 controller and the other with a PS3 controller played against each other, more then likely the PS3 gamer would out-twitch the Xbox 360 gamer in pure response time.
Winner - PS3
Conclusion
So there you have it. Both controllers have pros and cons, but unless you are hyper sensitive you won’t really notice the difference. I am sure this won’t settle anything but I hope I have provided some food for thought for you gamers out there.
There are many other game genres besides racers, fighters and shooters. If any of our readers out there are able to perform their own analysis and have found a new game genre a controller is better for, make sure to write about it in our comments section. If the games are available multiplatform or is comparable, and I am able to reproduce your findings I just might make a part two, including your findings.
Huge Sony Info Blowout
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
In attendance at the Sony Computer Entertainment Staff Annual Briefing held yesterday in London, an anonymous source going by the alias of ‘Legends’ has just tipped us off on all manner of huge PlayStation news. We must make it clear that D+PAD weren’t in attendance and that we have no reason to doubt the validity of Legends’ claims, but treat this as rumour until confirmed.
- Price cuts coming in March, PS3 performing better in PAL territories than 360
Our source tells us that SCEE President David Reeves took to the stage to discuss the current economic climate and how it shouldn’t affect PlayStation business, though was quick to mention that SCEE will be getting more competitive in price from March 2009 onwards. Our guess is that we’ll be seeing price cuts to PS3 around Easter to tie in with the release of Killzone 2…
Reeves then went on to say that the PS3 has a bigger install base than the 360 in PAL territories, and that the install base gap will significantly increase in 2009. Apparently SCEE is the success story of the SCE divisions, generating more profit than SCEA and SCEJ. 2008 sees it ‘in the black’ in profit our inside man revealed. Apparently there are more technological innovations to come for both PS3 and PSP, but details weren’t disclosed.
- Growth of PSN
PSN will be getting much more investment in the future, and having generated £150m in 2008, it’s considered a huge success for Sony. Sony Studio titles will also begin their life with a Blu-ray release and the franchises will be expanded with online content.
- LittleBigPlanet & MotorStorm coming to PSP
Our source also confirmed that LittleBigPlanet PSP is definitely in development and that Media Molecule have been working on it for four months. Footage was shown to attendees, though Alex Evans allegedly wasn’t prepared to show it himself because it was such an early build. “It looked good, obviously not PS3 good, but missing the level of detail that you get in a final release” says Legends.
MotorStorm PSP is on the way and ‘target footage’ was shown. No more details on that one.
- Uncharted 2, Killzone 2 & God of War 3 info
A 30 second clip of in-game footage of Uncharted 2 was shown displaying Drake being shot at, followed by an explosion. No full title or location was revealed though our source tells us that he did spot a wall with a line of 4 or 5 Aztec masks. Don’t expect a huge graphical leap though - “Looks the same as Uncharted 1, no bad thing”, says our source.
The intro to Killzone 2 was also shown off which “showed the character from the original trailer and a Helghan leader”. “Paints a picture of the world a bit more,” says Legends.
Finally our source revealed that God of War 3 was “masterfully shown at the end”, and that it looked so good our source wasn’t clear whether it was CGI or not!
The trailer showed Kratos wielding his swords and fighting off hoards of skeletons and Cyclops’s, before catching a ride on an eagle, and killing it when he got dropped off. The final scene showed Kratos looking up to a long dark, deep cavern, presumed to be Mount Olympus.
“Some of it looked like it could be in-game action because of the camera angles, but it all looked so good that it couldn’t be. CGI or not, everyone was pumped up by this. The anticipation is growing. God of War 3 could be amazing.”
So there you have it. Technological innovations inbound, PS3 price cut early next year, LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm coming to PSP, Uncharted 2 and an “amazing” looking God of War 3. What more could you want?
Which Console Had the Best Exclusives in 2008?
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
For gamers, the new year usually begins after mid-November and this year’s no different; pretty much all major console exclusives have been released. So, this is the first time that we can actually look back at 2008 and see which console had the best exclusives for the year - the PS3, Xbox 360, or Wii.
To do this, I decided to tally up the Metascore ratings (as of 11/20) for what are arguably the top ten exclusives for each console. Games that are available on PC and only one console are on the list as well (World of Goo and Left 4 Dead are two examples). So let’s dive right in to those potentially forum-rioting numbers:
Wii:
- No More Heroes - 83%
- Super Smash Bros. Brawl - 94%
- Mario Kart Wii - 82%
- Wii Fit - 80%
- Wario Land: Shake it! - 78%
- Harvest Moon: Tree of Tranquility - 64%
- World of Goo - 95%
- Wii Music - 63%
- Tales of Symphonia: Dawn of the New World - 68%
- Animal Crossing: City Folk - 71%
Average: 77.8%
PS3:
- GT5: Prologue - 80%
- Haze - 55%
- Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots - 94%
- Ratchet and Clank Future: Quest for Booty - 76%
- Wipeout HD - 87%
- SOCOM: Confrontation - 62%
- LittleBigPlanet - 95%
- Motorstorm: Pacific Rift - 81%
- Resistance 2 - 87%
- Valkyria Chronicles - 86%
Average: 80.3%
Xbox 360:
- Ninja Gaiden II - 81%
- Too Human - 65%
- Tales of Vesperia - 82%
- Viva Pinata: Trouble in Paradise - 82%
- Infinite Undiscovery - 68%
- Fable II - 89%
- Gears of War 2 - 93%
- Banjo-Kazooie Nuts & Bolts - 78%
- Left 4 Dead - 89%
- Lips - 72%
Average: 79.9%
Here are the averages in handy chart form:
The closest battle, of course, was between the Xbox 360 and the PS3. The PS3 claimed the top spot, but only by the slim margin of 0.4%. Overall, both consoles had flops, the PS3’s being Haze and Socom, the Xbox 360’s Too Human and Infinite Undiscovery. However, both consoles had golden titles as well, such as LittleBigPlanet, Metal Gear Solid 4, and Gears of War 2.
The Wii was in last place, but not by as much as most expected. The duds of the Wii (Wii Music, Harvest Moon, and Tales of Symphonia) were balanced out by great titles like World of Goo and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. And anyways, since the Wii is still outselling the PS3 and Xbox 360 combined, Nintendo doesn’t really care about these numbers.
So after all of that fighting between fanboys on forums across the internet, the dust has finally settled. And guess what: it turns out that all three consoles did very well. So, fanboys, learn this: your fighting amounts to nothing. Can’t we all just enjoy good games, no matter what console they’re on?
Game Of The Year 2008 Awards Dominated By PS3 Trio?
Posted by admin | Filed under Free PS3, Free PS3 Games, Free PS3 News
It won’t be long before we have to hand out our Game of the Year awards, but we’d like to know what you think beforehand. The last top-notch PlayStation 3 exclusive for 2008 has been released, and we figure now’s a good time to ask: what was the best PS3 title this year?
We suppose you’re free to mention a multiplatform game, like Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, or Dead Space, but it’s the powerful trio of top-notch PS3 exclusives that have impressed us this year. It started with the amazing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in June, moved to the innovative and addictive LittleBigPlanet in October, and just recently, we received the gift of super fun intensity with Resistance 2. This is the trio that could very easily dominate any Game of the Year awards ceremony for any publication or event, simply because the three games all fall into separate categories. These aren’t three fantastic FPSs or RPGs that have excelled and entertained; these are three titles that may appeal to the widest possible demographic of gamers out there. There’s the cooperative platformer (which, in reality, probably doesn’t fit any genre mold), there’s the action/adventure game that some purists may wish to sub-categorize as “stealth,” and there’s the straight-up FPS; perhaps the most popular genre today. And yes, they’re all exclusive to the PS3, which - in our minds - separates that system from the competition.
There’s no doubt that GTAIV and games like Gears of War 2 are clear GoY contenders, and there’s no doubt that multiplatform titles sell the best (more consoles, more owners…duh). But we consider this a unique situation: one console has three exclusives in one year, none of which falling into the same genre, and all of which are legitimate GoY nominees. The last time this happened may have been back in 2001 with the PS2…Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Gran Turismo 3. A fine, fine year. For all platforms, really. But can anyone really argue against the idea that 2008 was indeed the year of the PS3?
New Call of Duty outsells CoD4 by more than 2 to 1 in UK

The first week sales of Call of Duty: World at War have outsold Call of Duty 4’s debut by more than 2 to 1.
The title – bookies favourite to be Christmas number one – has gone to the top of the All Formats charts in the UK, according to data from GfK Chart-Track.
Games from publisher Activision Blizzard account for 25 per cent of all sales for the week ended November 15, with World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King taking the number two spot and becoming the fastest-selling PC title in the UK.
Guitar Hero: World Tour also broke into the top ten with the release of full band packs, at number six.
It was also a strong debut for Sega’s Football Manager 2009, entering the charts at number three and becoming the fastest-selling title in the series.
Sales of last week’s number one, Gears of War 2, dropped 64 per cent as the game dropped to number four in the charts.
Two new releases that didn’t make the top ten were Nintendo’s Wii Music which managed 16th position and EA’s Mirror’s Edge at number 20.
Sony’s big releases from last week – LittleBigPlanet and MotorStorm 2: Pacific Rift – fell down the charts after their debut week, sitting at 19 and 35, respectively.
Tom Clancy’s EndWar, also released last week, dropped to number 39.
The top ten All Formats titles in the UK follow:
- 01. Call of Duty: World at War
- 02. World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King
- 03. Football Manager 2009
- 04. Gears of War 2
- 05. FIFA 09
- 06. Guitar Hero: World Tour
