Game Of The Year 2008 Awards Dominated By PS3 Trio?

It won’t be long before we have to hand out our Game of the Year awards, but we’d like to know what you think beforehand. The last top-notch PlayStation 3 exclusive for 2008 has been released, and we figure now’s a good time to ask: what was the best PS3 title this year?
We suppose you’re free to mention a multiplatform game, like Grand Theft Auto IV, Fallout 3, or Dead Space, but it’s the powerful trio of top-notch PS3 exclusives that have impressed us this year. It started with the amazing Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots in June, moved to the innovative and addictive LittleBigPlanet in October, and just recently, we received the gift of super fun intensity with Resistance 2. This is the trio that could very easily dominate any Game of the Year awards ceremony for any publication or event, simply because the three games all fall into separate categories. These aren’t three fantastic FPSs or RPGs that have excelled and entertained; these are three titles that may appeal to the widest possible demographic of gamers out there. There’s the cooperative platformer (which, in reality, probably doesn’t fit any genre mold), there’s the action/adventure game that some purists may wish to sub-categorize as “stealth,” and there’s the straight-up FPS; perhaps the most popular genre today. And yes, they’re all exclusive to the PS3, which - in our minds - separates that system from the competition.
There’s no doubt that GTAIV and games like Gears of War 2 are clear GoY contenders, and there’s no doubt that multiplatform titles sell the best (more consoles, more owners…duh). But we consider this a unique situation: one console has three exclusives in one year, none of which falling into the same genre, and all of which are legitimate GoY nominees. The last time this happened may have been back in 2001 with the PS2…Final Fantasy X, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, and Gran Turismo 3. A fine, fine year. For all platforms, really. But can anyone really argue against the idea that 2008 was indeed the year of the PS3?
