Xbox Live less stable than PS3 PSN?

Users are reporting connection issues with their Xbox Live accounts. Apparently the accounts are being disconnected from the network. Microsoft has confirmed that there is an issue with Xbox Live at the moment. One would expect that Microsoft would have learned its lesson from last year’s spotty connection issues.
According to Major Nelson, the Xbox Operating Center have noticed that a large number of users are experiencing connection issues. We gave our Xbox 360 a whirl and noticed the disconnect issue as well. However, after waiting a few minutes and constantly retrying to connect, the account was able to establish a connection. Unfortunately, that connection did not last long as it was disconnected shortly afterwards.
If you recall, Microsoft was faced with a class-action lawsuit last December, which was filed to seek over $5 million in damages steaming from breaking the Xbox Live service agreement. The Xbox Live was not so “live” last holiday season, but the question remains if it will be déjà vu all over again.
It is quite annoying to be disconnected while in the middle of an online match. You could say that its frustrating enough to throw your controller at the TV. If the problems continue to persist into the holiday, you can be rest assured that many gamers will be foaming at the mouth.
Back in May, Microsoft announced that Xbox Live reached a new milestone of 12 million Live subscribers consisting of both Gold and Silver members. Considering that the Silver members can’t actually play games online, they really don’t contribute to a great deal of stress on the network.
Also, Sony announced that the PSN reached a new milestone of about 10 million active PSN accounts back in June. So, theoretically Sony and Microsoft probably have around the same number of active online users.
It is quite unfortunate that users that have to pay for the online service on Live are experiencing connection issues while users playing on the free PSN service have had a relatively stable experience. Microsoft needs to get its act together this holiday. I don’t think users will stand for a repeat of what happened last holiday season.
Anyone up for a match of Horde mode in Gears of War 2 the day after Christmas? Lets us all hope that Xbox Live will be up and running then.
Speed up your PSN Downloads w/ auto installs

Okay, so it might not be Sonic speedy fast downloads. But an increase in speed none the less… Tonight I was DLin‘ some content I had been missing out on the last week due to band rehersals and some light work here and there… Now normally I would’ve just Background downloaded all of my stuff and walked away from it until it was done — I’m glad I didn’t.
A big complain with the PSN is the fact when you DL something of the store you then have to install it. This means the long process becomes longer… Well, tonight I found out that if you que up all you want to DL and individually Download it from the store menu or your drop down download list, without doing a background download, it not only increased my speed from an average of 1mb every 4 seconds to 1 mb every 1 second to 2 seconds, but it also pre-installs your content for you. So you don’t have to go back out and manually do it from your xmb.
Now, I have a fast connection and I often average 1mb per second anyways, but a lot of times it’s not a constant 1mb per second… Sometimes it drops down to where I am only getting 1mb every 3 to 4 seconds — With this method it was much faster than just putting them all on the background and letting it do it for me.
It might not be as convenient, but it sure went a lot faster. I got over 1.4 gb of downloads in under 7 min flat this way.
Check it out for yourself and see what you think, and feel free to leave a comment with your results. If nothing else this is a decent way to get rid of installs after the DL if you’re only downloading 1 large file. Maybe it’ll help you, maybe it won’t… It’s just a heads up for you all to try out sometime.

PSN to be down tonight for five hours due to “maintenance”

Community Team Leader “Munster Bunster” (gotta love that name) over at the official PlayStation forums has announced that there will be essential maintenance performed on the PSN tonight at 8 p.m.* lasting for five (long) hours. As you obviously don’t tune a car while it’s moving, likewise, the PSN will be down during this time.
Speculation is rife regarding the reason behind the need for such a lengthy cessation of services. Might it be an upgrade to the servers for the upcoming onslaught that is LittleBigPlanet? Supporting requirements for firmware 2.50 and its new fancy headset settings? Or, dare we say it, laying some foundations for the mythical Home release?

And yes, we’re specifically not mentioning that this maintenance is on the same day as SOCOM’s release for a lot of people. We’re specifically not mentioning that.
